Next year, the Hansaviertel in Berlin-Tiergarten will celebrate its 50th anniversary. It is regarded as an example of a radical and comprehensive urban renewal of a middle-class residential area from the Imperial era, where the principles of modern architecture—such as light, air, and sun—along with the separation of functions like living, working, recreation, and transportation, are manifested based on the Athens Charter. The volume traces the development of the new Hansaviertel, the main outcome of the Interbau 1957, and addresses the housing policy, urban planning, and sociological discussions that accompanied the Interbau 1957. The approximately 40 individual projects from the Interbau 1957 are documented with a brief description, as well as image and plan materials.
