Product details
Franz Marc is 34 years old when he is drafted in 1914 due to mobilization into the 1st Replacement Battalion of the Royal Bavarian 1st Field Artillery Regiment. The enthusiastic patriot had already volunteered for military service before this. However, the lyrical and romantic mood he sketches in his letters from the front to Maria, his wife ("Today I held the first watch. It was very atmospheric, a wonderfully autumnal starry night!"), soon gives way to sheer horror at the atrocities of war. Cathrin Klingsöhr-Leroy, director of the Franz Marc Museum in Kochel, introduces the new edition of the letters, which is supplemented by 36 sketches that Franz Marc created at the front.
