The new book by Bernhard Waldenfels presents a draft of a phenomenology of broken experience, which is rooted in irretrievable events. In the realm of strangeness, experience unfolds through a splitting and doubling of the embodied self, transcending and undermining boundaries of order. This phenomenology is challenged by psychoanalysis and technology. However, the unconscious as a withdrawal of meaning and self, along with the interventions of a phenomenotechnics, creates productive friction. The dual meaning of the experiences we undergo is at risk of fading away when technology shields itself autopoietically against the fractures of experience, and pathos dissolves into poiesis.
