Is a mental disability simply there, or is it created by external living conditions, society, authorities, or doctors? In any case, it only becomes a disability in the context of society. Mental disability is never just the problem of the affected individuals, but always also that of their personal and social environment. Learning to understand the thought processes, emotional worlds, and behaviors of people with mental disabilities, and to deal with them appropriately, is the intention of this book. The author makes us non-disabled people aware of the expectations that disabled individuals have of us, how we can meet these expectations, but also how often we disappoint them, how often we ignore their needs, or deny them completely natural opportunities for development. This often happens unconsciously, even with good intentions.
