Bruno Taut in Japan
German, Bruno Dew, 2015Product details
The "stranded world traveler" Taut, who only intended to stop in Japan in May 1933 (as described in Volume I, 1933), has to build a life in exile as an author, consultant, and designer. The meticulously recorded and reflective diary serves as a unique personal document and an authentic source for the perceptions of a European in Japan during the 1930s. Taut's first published book in Japan, "Nippon Seen Through European Eyes," is a great success and quickly goes into reprints. His consulting work is educational, his practice is meant to serve as a model, and his writings aim to foster analysis and critical thinking. Starting in August 1934, Taut works as a designer for the workshops in Takasaki, producing 200 designs and many models for furniture and everyday objects in the first five months.
