Product details

In the third year of his exile in Japan, Bruno Taut is making a decent living and gaining widespread recognition through his books. He completes the manuscript "Japan's Art Seen Through European Eyes"; for the Ôkura Villa in Tokyo, he develops interior designs and climate-appropriate protective roofs. Additionally, he finishes the most beautiful interiors of his entire oeuvre, the communal spaces of the Hyûga Villa in Atami. In May 1935, a tour takes him from Kyoto to the Sea of Japan and the north. During this journey, he gathers material for his most important book project, "Houses and People of Japan." Nevertheless, the third volume of his diary turns into a dramatic account: the exile suffers from the climate; homesickness and a longing for death alternate with hope for the future, until the liberating call to Turkey brings his stay in Japan to an end.
