Behind the term "The Green Roof of Europe" lies the largest contiguous forest area in Central Europe, stretching from Upper Franconia through the Upper Palatinate, Lower Bavaria, and Bohemia to Austria. This cross-border region reveals itself upon closer inspection as a true treasure trove of nature, featuring rugged peaks, Nordic-like high plateaus, relics of primeval forests, dark moors, ponds, and a variety of endangered plant and animal species. Capercaillie, lynx, black stork, wildcat, fish and sea eagles, along with many other animals and rare plants, find a pristine habitat here. Nature and landscape photographer Berndt Fischer has spent years exploring the "Green Roof" and has captured fascinating photos that showcase this green belt, traversed by the Goldsteig from north to south, from an entirely new perspective.
