Siddhartha Gautama taught as the Buddha (literally "the Awakened One") the Dharma (literally "the Teaching") and became the founder of Buddhism. At the age of 35, he sat in deep meditation under a Pippala tree (now known as the Bodhi tree, in memory of the Buddha's awakening) on a full moon night when he attained Bodhi (awakening, often inaccurately translated as enlightenment).
