Product details
Why do millions of people visit folk festivals, what excites millions of visitors at amusement parks, and what fascinates millions of players in the simulations of these entertainment worlds in video games? This question is explored by cultural sociologist Sacha Szabo. He demonstrates that it is the experience of the extraordinary that attracts visitors. It is the experience of a realm beyond the everyday, where there are neither worries nor troubles; a temporary paradise in the here and now. Thus, Szabo develops a theory of pleasure based on these places. The uniqueness lies in the fact that this pleasure occurs in an exclusive space that exists solely for this special purpose: a heterotopia. This characteristic connects both analog and digital entertainment worlds. Therefore, Oktoberfest, Disneyland, and RollerCoaster Tycoon are not just three prominent examples.
