The advancing evolution of media has produced a flood of interface and display technologies that allow for and compel novel multimodal forms of representation. To adequately describe and analyze modern media technologies from a visual-theoretical perspective, an updated understanding of these phenomena should be placed alongside the traditional concept of the image. In this context, a multimodal understanding of materially induced imagery—within the framework of current interactive and digital moving image technologies—appears particularly promising when it comes to adequately capturing present and future developments. Therefore, this volume draws on the concepts of mediality, modality, and materiality for a media and image theory of the technosphere in order to examine their viability, scope, and connections.
