The foreign policy of the Federal Republic of Germany during the Adenauer era is considered well-researched in historical scholarship. However, the relationships with the United Nations, whose interesting and fluctuating course is presented in this work, are not as thoroughly explored. By analyzing a wealth of original documents, it becomes clear how determined and uncompromising Adenauer's foreign policy was in pursuing the major goals of "Western integration" and "sole representation." The author demonstrates how sovereignly West German foreign policy utilized the world organization to implement these primary objectives. The volume provides insights into the functioning and decision-making processes of the foreign policy of the early Federal Republic through the lens of diplomatic history. Additionally, politically interested readers can draw connections to today's foreign policy of the Federal Republic – an enlightening lesson in pragmatic diplomacy.
