Product details

Tolstejn Castle (German: Tollenstein, formerly Dohlenstein) is located in the Lusatian Mountains, two kilometers south of Jiretín pod Jedlovou (St. Georgenthal) in the Decín District (Czech Republic). It was one of the most significant medieval castles in North Bohemia. Dohlenstein Castle was first mentioned in 1337, although construction had already begun earlier after the death of Přemysl Ottokar II to protect the Zittau region. Following several military conflicts, the Saxon margraves Ernst and Albrecht purchased the castle in 1471. In 1485, it passed to Hans Georg von Schleinitz. The family then founded the village of St. Georgenthal (now Jiretín pod Jedlovou) twenty years later. In 1555, the owners abandoned the castle and built a Renaissance palace in the town of Rumburk. Since 1607, the castle has been considered abandoned. Its history ultimately ended during the Thirty Years' War when it was occupied again by the imperial army but was captured and burned down by the Swedish general Wrangel in 1642. After that, only robbers inhabited its ruins. During the Romantic period, interest grew in rebuilding the castle. In 1865, the innkeeper Johann Josef Münzberg established a Swiss-style inn, which operated until 1977. It was reopened in 1996. Today, the ruins are one of the most significant excursion destinations in the Lusatian Mountains. This volume is illustrated with 6 black and white images. It is a reprint of the original edition from 1882.
