Product details

This introduction provides a comprehensible overview of the basic knowledge of Hebrew script. The detailed description of the 22 letters of the alphabet is supplemented by information on pronunciation and reading exercises. The Hebrew vowel and cantillation marks are explained in equal detail. For further study of Hebrew, the bibliography offers important references. The Hebrew script belongs to the left-to-right Semitic scripts. It represents an evolution of the Canaanite alphabet, the oldest alphabetic writing system, and has remained essentially unchanged to this day. Among the many languages that have been and are written in this script, this introduction focuses on the two largest and most independent: Yiddish and Ladino. The emphasis is on the orthography of Hebrew.
