Learning Objectives: Participation in seminars on Yiddish literature and linguistics, personal reading, and research.

Concept: After a brief introduction to the Hebrew script, the standard language of Yiddish, known as Klal-Shprakh, is taught over 18 lessons. Spelling and transcription follow the orthographic standards of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. Each lesson is divided into several reading and grammar sections, followed by vocabulary lists. The texts (songs, letters, prose) provide a representative depiction of Yiddish culture. Conversational parts, explanations of idiomatic expressions, and exercises are included as supplementary materials. An answer key and a comprehensive glossary complete the textbook. The accompanying CD features selected texts read by actor Avishai Fisz.
