Handel wrote the German arias at a time when he was primarily composing Italian operas for the King's Theatre in London. The arias focus on the contemplation of the beauty of nature and the praise of God. Handel took the texts from the collection "Earthly Pleasures in God" by the Hamburg writer Barthold Heinrich Brockes.
