According to Adorno, law is "the ur-phenomenon of irrational rationality." The young Hegel believed that the state must treat "free individuals as a mechanical apparatus" and should therefore cease to exist. Eugen Paschukanis' work is a contribution to the materialist critique of those forms of exchange that are commonly regarded as unavoidable: law and state. He understands them, like commodities and capital, as fetishized forms of abstract domination that must not be used for emancipatory purposes but must be practically abolished if anything more than the repetition of the same is to emerge: the subjugation of the individual to seemingly necessary social coercion.
