No other ornamental plant species has been influenced by humans as intensely through breeding and research as the rose. After many years in which the beauty of the flowers was the sole focus and measure of all breeding efforts, today, attributes such as fragrance, flower longevity, and plant health are equally important to breeders and hobby gardeners. Simple flower shapes, naturally elegant appearances, and species with a wild character are increasingly in demand and popular. The rose is no longer seen as "just" a cultivated and cared-for individual plant, but is increasingly used in combination with perennials and other ornamental shrubs.
