Marthe and David are in free fall financially and must file for personal bankruptcy. Reluctantly, they move to the edge of a village into a barely habitable house that David has inherited. Even the internet avoids the area. The few remaining residents have forgotten how to live. The village, surrounded by genetically modified cornfields for biogas plants, seems to have lost its soul. When refugees are housed in former forced labor barracks, the population becomes polarized. Marthe, a tolerated outsider constantly searching for the worst news, witnesses the lethargy dissipating. Only David becomes increasingly silent, and one evening a note is left on the kitchen table.
