Product details

The fate of Anna Maria Schwägelin was shared by many women during the age of witch hunts. However, this trial took place in 1775, a time when new Enlightenment ideas were already being discussed and witch trials seemed to belong to the past. Based on previously believed lost sources, Wolfgang Petz reconstructs the psychological profile of a woman who became ensnared in the traps of her erotic and religious fantasies. This creates a dynamic picture of a transformative era from the perspective of ordinary people—an era that did not progress as straightforwardly toward the triumph of reason over superstition as one might think of the Enlightenment.
