Canon research as memory and discourse history. In collections of books that have become obsolete, the afterlife of a once vibrant Jewish culture in Germany before the Holocaust is present in Israel: In these books, fragments of a culture that had been preserved by immigrants and refugees from Germany to Palestine materialize, and which is now disappearing from everyday Israeli life with the last generation of its bearers. In statements about saved and lost books, but especially in read and preserved texts, traces of an "inner" history of Jewish emigration emerge. The canon in exile refers to the past tense of a reading culture and to the emigration and destruction of Jewish life in Germany.
