For almost half a century, the hottest front of the Cold War ran through Berlin. From the summer of 1945 until 1990, the intelligence services of NATO and the Warsaw Pact engaged in a continuous duel in the shadows here. However, German spies were also involved on both sides: for example, Erich Mielke's Stasi and Reinhard Gehlen's Federal Intelligence Service. The construction of the Wall in 1961 changed the political landscape. Nevertheless, Berlin remained the capital of spies until the Peaceful Revolution. Journalist Sven Felix Kellerhoff and historian Bernd von Kostka describe the spectacular successes of various intelligence services in the city and their failures in other endeavors.
