The aim of outreach support is to assist individuals who need help in a social context at the point where they would otherwise be left to fend for themselves: right in their own homes. Direct contact in the form of home visits allows for an understanding of the circumstances and living environments of those being visited, enabling a quicker assessment of which interventions may be appropriate. On the other hand, it carries the risk of violating the privacy of those visited, crossing boundaries, and being perceived as intrusive. In this respect, outreach work differs in many aspects from work conducted in self-designed workspaces. This handbook describes the outreach setting both theoretically and in terms of practice across various fields of work and target groups. It takes into account both current research findings and practice-oriented approaches.
