Carl Spitteler (1845-1924) is the only Nobel Prize-winning author born in Switzerland. His speech "Our Swiss Standpoint" from 1914 had a significant influence on the maintenance of Switzerland's absolute neutrality policy. However, interest in his life and work can hardly rely on current publications. This monograph addresses that gap: it provides essential information for those new to Spitteler and compiles data and facts for experts that have never been available in one place before. New archival material has been uncovered, particularly regarding the Nobel Prize award and the women in Spitteler's life and writings. The volume offers information on all of Spitteler's important texts, ranging from his early epic "Prometheus and Epimetheus" to "Olympic Spring," "Gotthard," and "Imago," as well as his later-written childhood memories. It also examines his influence and the case of Jonas Fränkel. The appendix includes a biography of the poet, voices about him and his work, and a bibliography.
