Scientists, artists, and intellectuals from Germany and Austria escaped the Nazis through often adventurous means. A refugee story with many parallels to today – however, the individuals affected do not come from Syria and Afghanistan. They were Nobel laureates, university professors, world-famous writers, and celebrated conductors, Jews and Christians, politicians and newspaper editors, all united by a common fate: the Nazis wanted to murder them. Among the refugees were Sigmund Freud, Stefan Zweig, Joseph Roth, Thomas, Heinrich, Golo, and Erika Mann, Franz Werfel and his wife Alma Mahler-Werfel, Alfred Polgar, Hermann Leopoldi, Ödön von Horvath, Anna Seghers, Robert Stolz, Friedrich Torberg, Karl Farkas, Billy Wilder, and many more.
