Product details
Third volume of the Molsdorf Trilogy. This book contains the authentic memories of the Molsdorf castle children and their caregivers, who lived in the formerly princely-countly house in Thuringia during the 1950s. Repurposed as a children's home, the culturally and historically valuable building was preserved from the threat of demolition by the order of the Soviet Military Administration. The long-term project to process this chapter of the castle's history brought former residents of the children's home together repeatedly from 2017 to 2019, culminating in an exhibition featuring historical photographs and a video work by Swiss memory artist Mats Staub at the current Molsdorf Castle Museum. The transcript of the video work—a kind of dialogical montage of interviews with the former caregivers—is part of this publication, along with various media snippets of the children who were aged 3 to 6 at the time. These life stages fall within the era of the early German-German division following the end of World War II. Thus, the elaborately designed book not only preserves personal stories but also excerpts from a "larger" historical chapter. It also includes a partial reprint of a photo album from a former caregiver and will be provided free of charge to the former residents. "Castle Children" with a work by Mats Staub, exhibition at the Molsdorf Castle Museum, August 25 - November 17, 2019.
