From March 10 to 13, 2009, scholars from several nations and disciplines gathered at the former Cluniac Priory of St. Ulrich in Bollschweil to discuss aspects of medieval noble castles. The project group "The Castles in Medieval Breisgau" at the University of Freiburg and the TU Dortmund organized the event, aiming to document, describe, and contextualize the castles of the Upper Rhine region. For the first time, the results of long-term research were summarized in five thematic blocks and compared across regions. Contributions were made by Erik Beck, Boris Bigott, Eva-Maria Butz, Lukas Clemens, Luisa Galioto, Holger Grönwald, Bertram Jenisch, Thilo Jordan, Stefan King, Jacky Koch, Heinz Krieg, Jürgen Krüger, Wendy Landewé, Cord Meckseper, and Berhard Metz.
