The volume addresses the question of political and social participation of women and men in Muslim societies before, during, and after the Arab Spring, as well as the significance of gender deconstructions in a changing society. In most countries of the Arab Spring, gender relations are shaped by a patriarchal structure and tradition that particularly restrict women's personal freedom and political participation. The revolutionary processes in these societies offer the opportunity to break open, rethink, and negotiate gender relations. The self-liberation of Arab women cannot automatically succeed through the current revolutionary changes. Nevertheless, revolutions possess a utopian potential that cannot be limited by any counter-revolutionary measures.
