The work focuses on the treatment of convicted sex offenders. As part of a meta-analysis, the current state of research on the relapse prevention effectiveness of offender treatment will be summarized. The analysis centers on the extent to which existing treatment options for this offender group are effective, while also attempting to isolate specific aspects of successful treatment. The author provides a general characterization of sex offenders, the prevalence of sexual delinquency, recidivism, and the consequences for victims of sexual offenses to gain an overview of the subject area and document the necessity of an appropriate approach to dealing with offenders. This is followed by a concentration on treatment-relevant characteristics of sex offenders and the available general treatment approaches.
