Recovery is a holistic, meaningful approach that refers to all internal and external factors contributing to the health and quality of life of individuals suffering from schizophrenia. The approach is based on the formula "Hope - Power - Meaning" (Amering) and places a significantly greater emphasis on the self-healing abilities of people with schizophrenia than was previously the case with a more illness-centered understanding. This encourages those affected and their supporters to embark on a path of personal empowerment. After a detailed introduction to the various components of the recovery concept, its opportunities and limitations in psychiatric residential facilities are discussed, both in terms of societal structures and the conditions within the facility itself.
