Four central German wing altarpieces, masterpieces of the late Middle Ages, are the focus of this volume. They originate from parish and monastery churches in Erfurt, Leipzig, and Stendal and were created between the 1470s and 1490s. The author builds on the findings of previous stylistic research. According to this, these altarpieces emerged from the collaboration of the same sculptors with different painters. Expanding the methodological approach to include the study of written sources or systematic research into models, as well as addressing questions about patrons and functions, leads to a wealth of new insights.
