Product details

The first encounter between C.G. Jung and Sigmund Freud took place in February 1907, after the two had been in correspondence for a year and Jung had already been testing Freudian ideas in his research and practical work since 1904. Until 1912, the connection between the two scientists and doctors was close, and Jung was regarded as one of the leading psychoanalysts. Although their personal relationship began to become strained—particularly as a result of the publication of "Transformations and Symbols of the Libido" (1911/12)—Jung remained president of the International Psychoanalytical Association until 1914. The first nine essays in this fourth volume of the Collected Works cover the period of Jung's collaboration with Freud: they outline the theory and method of psychoanalysis, apply these to specific topics, and address objections or misunderstandings from their opponents. This is followed by works that contain essential elements of Jung's own critique and perspective. The judgment shifts, the contrasts lead to an open break, and from a temporal distance, insights emerge regarding the personal conditions of both and the necessity of following one's own path. The encounter with Freud at the beginning of his career significantly shaped Jung and left its traces in numerous other works.
