Since the major exhibition in 2008 at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, Chargesheimer (1924 - 1971) has been regarded as a cult figure in the history of German photography. In the 1950s, he roamed the streets of Paris and Cologne with his camera, but also ventured into the Cologne Zoo. For the artist, it was a place of tranquility amidst an increasingly noisy metropolis. One can see contemplative monkeys, penguins lined up, casually standing flamingos, sad bears, melancholic tigers, lurking hippos, and repeatedly, elephants. He also focused on the people in the zoo. Here, a lonely lady in a fur coat feeding a goose, there, astonished children in Sunday clothes at the barrier, solitary strollers on their way. Photos that tell stories. Unknown and previously unseen images from a time when a visit to the zoo was still one of the highlights of the year. A photo book celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Cologne Zoo. A blend of photography and Cologne Zoo history. Discoveries for fans of a charismatic photographer.
