At the center of this volume is the highly significant royal portal, the King's Portal of the Cathedral of Chartres. Far more than just a structural element, the tripartite arrangement with its many hundreds of fully preserved sculptures forms its own cosmos and therefore demands to be viewed as a unity. In this sense, the author presents for the first time the intimate interplay and mutual enrichment between artistic form and philosophical thought in a remarkable work of Western art development. Additionally, the capital frieze is documented in its entirety for the first time, including scenes that have not yet been interpreted.
