"Chiara - A Journey into Light" is a moving and powerful photo essay about illness and dying, born from personal pain and deep emotional impact. The Bernese artist Elisabeth Zahnd Legnazzi documented the dying process of her daughter Chiara, who suffered from an incurable brain tumor, in a very poignant way, but not solely dark and hopeless. The book gathers around 60 previously unpublished portraits. It is a selection made by the artist from approximately 400 photographs taken during the last seven months of Chiara's life. The images are complemented by abstract shots of landscapes in dissolution, which visualize the change in perception and the loss of senses. The artist never uses her terminally ill child for the photographs; instead, she captures her in her suffering and in her remarkable warmth.
