The lived reality of children with mental illnesses is expressed nowhere as clearly as in their works. Whether in color or black and white, whether as paintings or comics – these images convey a clearer message than diagnoses, medical histories, or questionnaire data can. However, it is essential to understand the context of this children's art, which is the mental illness. For this reason, the images in this catalog are accompanied not only by the names of their creators but also by their diagnoses. This was also the concept of the exhibition of the same name, held on the occasion of the XXXIII Congress of the German Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in March 2013 in Rostock. Eleven institutions of child and adolescent psychiatry participated in this nationwide exhibition, from which a selection of submissions is presented. The internal perspective of the patients contrasts with the external perspective.
