Due to the arrangement of its entries by subject matter, the dictionary of Manchu created by imperial order in five languages (Five-Language Mirror) does not lend itself to direct use as a reference work for unknown word forms. Any alphabetically structured arrangement of the dictionary would have only been able to consider one of the five languages. To make the entries of all languages searchable, indices were created for Manchu, Tibetan (in Romanization of the Tibetan script, but not for the Manchu transliteration systems), Mongolian, Turkic (also here for the Romanization of the Arabic script, but not for the pronunciation indications in Manchu script), and Chinese (here organized graphically), which for the first time allow users to look up all components of even complex compounds individually, in contrast to earlier works.
