Christian Enzensberger (1931-2009) was a versatile literary scholar, translator, writer, and naturalist. He taught English literature in Munich, initially writing about Victorian poetry, then publishing the theory book "Literature and Interest" in 1977 and his functional aesthetics work "What need for literature?" in 1987. He led student courses on literary translation and had published important translations since the 1960s, including works from the Greek Nobel Prize winner Georgios Seferis to Lewis Carroll's still unsurpassed "Alice.".
