Christian VII ascends to the Danish throne in 1766 at the age of seventeen. His marriage to the two-years-younger Caroline Mathilde is notoriously poor, and the cabinet largely handles the affairs of state until a German doctor enters the scene: Johann Friedrich Struensee, a committed Enlightenment thinker who not only gains the trust of the king but also that of the queen. Dario Fo reconstructs, based on unpublished documents and secret diaries, a dramatic love triangle and at the same time one of the most crucial chapters in Danish history, which catapults the country into modernity.
