Product details
The most famous women's monastery in the Middle Ages was the Helfta Monastery. Saint Gertrude arrived in Helfta as a five-year-old girl. The abbess at that time, Gertrud von Hackeborn, became her spiritual mother, while the holy Mechtild von Hackeborn was her novice mistress. The three holy nuns—Gertrud von Helfta, Mechtild von Hackeborn, and Mechtild von Magdeburg—formed a triumvirate whose brilliance shone across the entire Western world. The monastery was destroyed during the Reformation. However, today, the Helfta Monastery is being revived and is developing into a new spiritual center amidst a paganized environment. Gertrude was highly intelligent, mastering Latin in both speech and writing. When she was 26 years old, Christ appeared to her and said, "Do not be afraid. I will save you and set you free." Gertrude was filled with tender love for Christ, her spiritual bridegroom. What Saint John of the Cross asked of God became a reality for Gertrude: "Tear the veil!" A love story began between a human soul and her God, characterized by such tenderness, intimacy, and boundless openness that it is unique in all mystical literature. For this reason, she was the only mystic to receive the titles "The Great" and "Prophetess of the Inner Life." All her spiritual conversations with Christ were captured in her main work, "Messenger of Divine Love," a book that captivates the reader. Among the merits of this book is the masterful translation from Latin by Canon Johannes Weissbrodt from Koblenz. With his theological education and familiarity with the spirit and tone of the German Middle Ages, along with his intuition and poetic linguistic ability, he was called to this work.
