Pater Pio had two visions when he was fifteen years old: He was called to fight as a brave warrior against a giant so tall that he reached the clouds with his forehead. He was afraid and refused, but the angel urged him, "Begin the fight with confidence, fight bravely, I will stand by your side." The clash was terrible, but the giant was defeated. The entire life of P. Pio became a daily struggle against Satan. In a second vision, a great mission was promised to him, presumably the stigmata, the prayer groups he founded, and his hospital. Swiss Cardinal Charles Journet wrote: "Stigmata serve to remind us in a shocking way of the sufferings of God, who was tortured to death for us, as well as the necessity to suffer and die for the entire Church before it can enter into glory.".
