This introduction to Christian mysticism provides a refreshing clarity: it systematically addresses the concept of mysticism in an initial approach, then elaborates on the core motives of Christian mysticism: the union with God at the depth of the self, the connection between personal and impersonal images of God, and the unity of contemplation and (political) practice. However, mysticism must also defend itself today against attempts to explain this experience of unity in psychopathological or neurobiological terms. For the author, demonstrating its authenticity means not only assisting individuals in their spirituality but also acknowledging the significance that mysticism holds for the tradition of faith and its transmission in contemporary times.
