According to the narrative, Saint Christopher received his name from Jesus after carrying the young Savior across a river. The earliest traces of this carrier legend can be found in the 12th century. However, further accounts of his person are much older. In the 8th century, several centuries after his martyrdom, the Latin Passio was created. Professor of Religious Studies Otto-Hubert Kost examines this in detail and attempts to illuminate the origins of the legend and myth formation. These may possibly date back to the second millennium BCE, to the Hurrians and Hittites. From these beginnings, the author outlines the path of the saint's transmission and presents a new interpretation to determine the origin, essence, and mission of the figure of Christopher.
