What does one need to spend a relatively happy evening of life in a retirement home? The main character of the novel "Chronicle of Forgetting," a retired lawyer, believes he knows: he has his own four walls, his health reports are fine, he has control over his bodily functions, he is not helpless, not confused, and is aware of his surroundings; in short, he is the master of his life. At least, it seems that way at the beginning. Gradually, however, his memory proves to be quite porous—far more than he suspects and more than his efforts to maintain his cognitive abilities can compensate for. The here and now increasingly takes place solely in his mind, the present turns into an increasingly fantastical narrative, and soon one wonders which reality is the more real.
