Product details
Born around 1460 at Hegi Castle near Winterthur, Hugo von Hohenlandenberg had an unusual career. In 1496, he was elected Bishop of Constance and led what was likely the largest German diocese until his death in 1532. As a church prince and "born Swiss," he found himself between the "Swabians" and the "Swiss." As bishop, he faced reformers like Zwingli, and as a builder, he promoted castles such as Hegi, Arbon, and Meersburg. As a patron, he strategically used art to propagate religious content, and as a nobleman, he was part of a wide familial network. A colorful representative of the late medieval power church, Hugo von Hohenlandenberg was also a man of transitional times. The book addresses current research on the diocese of Constance in the 15th and 16th centuries, presents individual aspects of Hugo's episcopate, and invites readers on a journey to significant locations.
