Product details

"How wonderful it must be to be able to come to you here and there," wrote Emma Rheinberger on March 19, 1904, to Alois Rheinberger, "between America and Liechtenstein." The correspondence between Emma Rheinberger in Vaduz and the wine pioneer in Nauvoo (Illinois) from 1903 to 1915 represents a special gem in the collection of emigrant letters presented here. This publication by the Historical Society for the Principality of Liechtenstein focuses on the private correspondence between Liechtenstein emigrants in the United States and those who stayed behind from 1877 to 1925. The letters from Liechtenstein to the USA provide a microhistorical view of everyday life in Liechtenstein. The letter writers report on the well-being of relatives and acquaintances, special events such as floods and fires, agriculture, and particularly viticulture, rumors about love affairs and crimes, as well as various gossip from the village milieu. Contemporary politics is also frequently addressed. In America, on the other hand, people took to writing who would not have had any reason to do so in their old surroundings. They were wanderers between two worlds, and their statements pertain to both continents. Their letters often reflect the conditions in distant Liechtenstein.
