Product details

This publication can be read as a survey of the current interdisciplinary discussion on issues of women's and gender history. The range of topics spans from the early modern period through the 19th century to the present day. What they all have in common is the engagement with the category of gender and gender relations. Official veiling mandates, courtly dances, hair braids, princess colors, gender roles in marriage, professional celibacy, men's magazines in radio programs, gender implications in photo reports and voting films on old-age pensions – these keywords point to the thematic and methodological diversity of the contributions and the sources examined. Just thirty years ago, Regina Wecker noted that the economic history of the 19th century had been written "as if women did not exist, or at least as if they played no role in economic life." The fact that this has changed with the establishment and institutionalization of gender history and gender studies at universities is largely thanks to the tireless commitment of the professor from Basel.
