Switzerland was directly affected by the coordination of the arts in the Third Reich. It often served as the first point of contact for emigrants seeking to build a new existence here. At the same time, high-ranking representatives of the Nazi regime sought to influence Swiss literature by creating loyalty relationships. The Swiss educational elite frequently supported such efforts. Fascinated by the efficiency with which Germany advanced the nationalization of literature and theater, the Swiss Writers' Association ultimately demanded comparable measures from the federal government to promote national literary production. The authors' efforts culminated in 1938 with the founding of the cultural foundation Pro Helvetia. The work reconstructs this history based on largely unknown materials.
