Product details

A nationally socialist "contaminated" opera is to be brought back to the stage with a renewed libretto due to its musical riches – but how can this be done without simultaneously denying history? In addition to a comparison of the old and new librettos of Othmar Schoeck's opera "Das Schloss Dürande," this volume documents both the creation of the opera and the process of its revision based on previously unpublished sources. From today's perspective, the Swiss composer Othmar Schoeck truly did himself no favors when, at the end of the 1930s, he collaborated with the Baden poet Hermann Burte at the suggestion of the Winterthur patron Werner Reinhart to write an opera. To make matters worse, "Schloss Dürande," based on a novella by Joseph von Eichendorff, was performed at the State Opera Berlin in 1943.
