Valentin Boltz was a hospital pastor in Basel since 1546. As a captivating preacher, he seeks to emphasize his theological and pastoral concerns through written dialogue and on the theater stage. Two biblical dramas and the book of consolation are currently only available in their first prints from the 16th century. The new edition aims to fill this gap and provide explanatory comments on the texts. In the autumn of 1534, when Duke Ulrich of Württemberg was reinstated in his governing rights and his land was reformed, the name Valentin Boltz first appears in Württemberg sources. Boltz hails from the Alsatian town of Ruffach and is said to have attempted to reform the Alpirsbach monastery and later the community of Schorndorf as a preacher in Württemberg service, both times without success. In 1539, while serving as a deacon in Tübingen, he translates for the poor.
