Summer 1945, World War II has come to an end. The dimensions of the European catastrophe become tangible. At the same time, the outlines of a new geopolitical order are emerging. Switzerland participates in the reconstruction but wants to preserve its independence and not join the aid efforts of the victorious powers. In this situation, the aid organization Swiss Donation, initiated by the Federal Council, offers to take in 2,000 children from concentration camps for a period of six months for recuperation. The author examines the creation, planning, and implementation of this aid initiative, which was rooted in the tradition of humanitarian child assistance.
